Apple filled a gaping hole in its product lineup with new iPhones boasting larger screens like Samsung's flagship Galaxy smartphones. Now, Samsung is coming out with a smaller phone that looks and feels more like an iPhone.
The new iPhones measure 4.7 inches and 5.5 inches diagonally, up from 4 inches before. Still, that's smaller than the 5.1 inches on the Galaxy S5 and the 5.7 inches on the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Note 4 phones.

But even Samsung is stepping back from its recent practice of releasing ever-bigger phones. The new Galaxy Alpha matches the 4.7 inches on the iPhone 6 and has a metal frame like the new iPhones, reflecting Samsung's attempt to mirror Apple's emphasis on design.

Unfortunately, the Alpha falls short in a few ways, including the resolution of its display. Other shortcomings will become apparent as I go through the various features.

The Alpha will be available in the U.S. starting Friday through AT&T. It will cost $200 with a two-year service contract, or $613 without one. The $613 price, which can be paid in installments, is less than the $650 starting price for the Galaxy S5 (Review | Pictures) and the iPhone 6. You also get double the storage with the Alpha, but it's still a high price to pay for technology that isn't top of the line.

Samsung Group has announced the Galaxy Note 4, and given consumers a chance to see the specs. The new phone has been anticipated, but an announcement was not expected for some time. Samsung has bolstered its budget smartphone lineup in India with two new handsets, the Galaxy Star 2 Plus (SM-G350E) and the Galaxy Ace NXT (SM-G313H), both of which are now listed on the company’s official website in the country. We had previously about the Galaxy Ace NXT’s imminent launch in India – the handset features a 4-inch WVGA display, a 3-megapixel rear camera, 1.2GHz single-core processor, 512 MB of RAM, and 4 GB of internal storage. It also has a microSD slot, a 1,500 mAh battery and dual SIM slots; it runs on Android 4.4 KitKat, underneath Samsung’s TouchWiz Essence UX.


The Galaxy Star 2 Plus is also not a phone that we haven’t run across before, with the device spotted two months ago on its way to India for testing. The Galaxy Star 2 Plus is quite similar to the Galaxy Ace NXT in specs, with the only differences being the 4.3-inch WVGA display and 1,800 mAh battery. Neither handset has a front-facing camera, though both sport standard connectivity options including Wi-Fi, HSPA+, Bluetooth 4.0, and USB 2.0

Samsung launched its updated line of Galaxy Tab S tablets with Super AMOLED displays and, a day later, Sony launched its Xperia Z2 tablet in India. Sony’s tablet screen has a lower resolution than the iPad Air, but is incredibly powerful. Powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor, it comes with 3GB of RAM.

It’s got a super svelte chassis, which is also water-resistant and dust-proof, something none of its competitors boasts. It has a unique active noise-cancellation technology and a microSD card slot supporting up to 64GB of memory. It’s also one of the lightest tablets in the market rivaling the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5.

On the back, it has an 8-megapixel camera capable of shooting video. On the front, there’s a 2.1-megapixel camera. While it has no LTE support, the device comes with voice-calling feature. Last year, the Xperia Z tablet was considered to be the best large-screen Android tablet in the Indian market. This year, the competition is fiercer.

Samsung Electronics has started selling two new tablets in the Galaxy Tab 4 series in the Indian market.

While the Eight inch Galaxy Tab 4 is priced at Rs 23,490, the 10.1-inch Tab 4 is retailing for Rs 29,750.
The Galaxy Tab 4 comes with HD display with 1280 x 800 pixel resolution. The tablets are powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core processor coupled with 1.5GB of RAM, and run on Android 4.4 operating system.
Other features include 3G, Wi-Fi, 16GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot, a 3MP rear camera and a 1.3MP front-facing camera.
The eight-inch device packs in a 4,450 mAh battery while the 10.1-inch tablet has a 6,200 mAh battery. The former weighs 323 grams while the later weighs 495 grams. However, both are 7.9mm thin.

Samsung on 29/04/14  launched Galaxy K Zoom at an event in Singapore. The device, a successor to Galaxy Camera 2, combines the features of a smartphone with a full-featured point and shoot camera.

K Zoom uses components similar to those in the high-end Galaxy phones and is powered by Android KitKat. The big difference, however, between the phones and the K Zoom is the imaging hardware. K Zoom uses a point-and-shoot size image sensor that can click photos in 20.7 megapixels. The design is also different. K Zoom weighs 200 grams and has a thickness of 20mm.

The device will be available in the different markets worldwide, including India, in the coming months, but for now there are no specific details on the India launch date or price.

"With the introduction of the Galaxy K Zoom, Samsung continues to demonstrate our commitment to creating products that meet the diverse demands of our consumers," said Sun Hong Lim, senior vice president of Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics. "The new Galaxy K Zoom (provides) all-in-one mobile experience."

The K Zoom offers 10X zoom and has a xenon flash. In terms of focal length, the lens in K Zoom covers 24-240mm. The lens has an aperture of F3.1-6.3. The device also has a 2MP front camera.

K Zoom uses an image sensor based on BSI (backside illuminated) technology and optical image stabilization, which is likely to help users click better images in low light.

In terms of software features, the device has almost all the features that high-end Galaxy cameras have, including support for cellular connectivity and ability to run almost all Android apps. In terms of photography related features, two stand out: Pro Suggest Mode, which should help users apply filters in a better way; and Selfie Alarm for helping users take better selfies.

K Zoom has a 4.8-inch SuperAMOLED screen with 1280x720p resolution. It is powered by a six-core (1.3GHz quad-core and 1.7GHz dual-core) processor and 2GB RAM. There is 8GB internal storage but using a SD card a user can add up to 64GB more. The device has a 2,430mAh battery.

Samsung, which is not as strong as Sony or Canon in the camera market in terms of market share, is trying to compete by using Android and smartphone combination to make cameras smarter. The company launched Galaxy Camera in 2012 and followed it with Galaxy Camera 2 in 2013.

The idea has been to connect to consumers who like the ease of a smartphone camera and yet want picture quality that is possible only through good full-size camera hardware.

While so far Samsung has got the smart part right in its Galaxy cameras, it is yet to get the picture quality part right. The image quality offered by earlier Galaxy cameras has been good but not exceptional. Also, the price — especially the launch price — of Galaxy cameras has been on the higher side, keeping consumers away from them.
